I never knew my parents.
When I was 7 years old, I became a maid for people who needed me. All my other years I was in orphan homes. But when I was 16, I was sold to the Turner family. They had a daughter, Cassidy, who was 19 years old. And a son, Jason, who was 17 years old. When I first got there, I thought that it would just be like the other times; but I was wrong. Something was going to change my life. And my relationship with the family; especially with one of them.
It was a couple weeks after my 16th birthday. I just found out I was going to be staying at the Turner’s home as there maid. I had 1 week to pack all my stuff and leave. I was actually glad to leave that place. I didn’t know anyone, and no one knew me.
The day finally came to leave for the Turner’s home. Jessica, one of the ladies that helped at the orphan center and was the only one who I trusted, came with me. She was like a big sister to me. “Mia, they forgot to mention this to you but the Turner family is one of the wealthiest people in the country, they are in the top 10” Jessica said. “What!?” I exclaimed, I never even heard of these people! And I never ever had to be a maid to one of the wealthiest people in the country! “Yes it’s true. You have to be on your best behavior. These people are rich and can push you right back to us just like that” she said. I sat there in silence thinking to myself. I hated rich families. They always thought they were too good for anyone else. “Ok, I will. I’ll miss you a lot, Jessica” I said hugging her.
We finally got to there house. I stepped out of the car and was astonished by what I saw. There house was bigger than any house I have seen. It looked exactly like the Aston Hall, but it wasn’t. We stepped in the house, there was a cream colored tile all around. To my left there was a winding staircase with metal railing. To my right was an indent in the wall with a wooden stand with a antic lamp and flowers on top of it. The door was glass but outlined black. The walls were just a little darker than the floor. There was a huge open window going up to the next floor next to the door. Plants surrounded the stairs. We walked in a little more. There were 2 doorways and to its left was a hallway leading somewhere else. Mrs. Turner came walking out of the door on the right.
“Oh you must be our new maid” she said walking up to us. “Get your things, Lucy will show you your room than meet me in the kitchen.” I said goodbye to Jessica and left with Lucy to my new room. We walked up the tile staircase it went around and around. At the top of the stairs the big window stopped. I turned around and there was a long hallway. We turned left from the stairs, one of the doors to our right. “Who is this?” the girl asked in a disgusted way. “This is your new maid” Lucy answered. After the girl walked off Lucy said, “That’s Ms. Turner’s daughter Cassidy, she is 18”. We walked on and another door opened. “Hey Lucy…oh, who is this” a guy asked. “Jason, this is Mia, she is a new maid. Mia this is Jason. You guys are about the same age” Lucy said. Jason gave me a sweet cheesy smile. And walked away slowly backwards still watching us. We got to the end of the hallway. There was a huge living room, it had a dark oak table with 4 chairs around it. Wooden floor around it, to the left of the table there was a small walkway and a door. Behind the table was white carpet, black leather couches with red and light brown pillows. In front of them about 6 feet was a fireplace with a mantle. A window was behind the couch to your right with thin white curtains and thicker ones of red pulled back. Lights hanging from the ceiling with a fan above them, the wall to your right was painted a dark red, and the other 3 walls were a light brown color.
“Here is your room” Lucy said turning into the small walkway and opening the door. It was not a huge room, but big enough. The walls were a very light brown color. White curtains across the big window that was the size of the wall. My bed had a white bed sheets, it was against the left wall. There was a fireplace on the right with a mirror above the mantle. A glass table was in the corner, there was a lamp on a night stand next to my bed. “Wow, is your room like this too?” I asked in amazement. Lucy just laughed and nodded, “Wow, these people are rich!” I put my things down and unpacked. I finally finished and went downstairs with Lucy. When we got downstairs, I followed Lucy into the door on the left, which was the kitchen. There was stoves everywhere, there had to be at least 5 of them. Cooks were running around franticly in there white outfits and hats. 3 butlers were getting dishes ready and nice. “Everybody listen up!” Lucy yelled to the kitchen, “This is Mia, she is the new maid in the house and she would really like it if we made her feel loved.” Everyone smiled and waved, I waved back and they all went back to work. “okay, you will be helping with the food, clothes, all the cleaning, and pretty much anything” Lucy said again pulling me through the kitchen to a door to the left. It was a huge laundry room with 3 dryers and 3 washers. “okay, Cassidy likes her clothes done by exactly 3:00 and Jason doesn’t really matter. Than Mr. and Mrs. Turner want there’s done by 5:00. So we need to start moving on this” She said giving me 2 baskets to go get Jason and Cassidy’s clothes. I went back to the kitchen and out the door. Than up stairs to the kids rooms, I went into Cassidy’s room first. There was a basket in the corner over flowing with clothes. I put all of them in one of the baskets and went to Jason’s room. His basket wasn’t as full so it didn’t weigh as much. “Do you need help” Jason asked from behind me. “oh, no its fine. Why do you want to help anyways?” I asked. “Well, I never really liked the idea of servants in the house. Dad hasn’t either but ever since he married Sarah, we’ve been getting more and more. She acts like we can’t have enough people working here and that she can’t do anything for herself” he replied as he handed me some clothes that I dropped. “I don’t mean to intrude but what happened to your real mother?” I asked quickly. “She died of cancer 3 years ago. A year ago Dad married Sarah, and we had a daughter in the family.” Jason said sitting on a chair that was next to his desk that was next to the door. “Oh, I’m sorry I had no idea” I said feeling bad for asking. “It’s fine. You’re new so its not your fault, you would have found out soon or later” he said smiling. I couldn’t help but laugh, and walk out of the room.
I went back downstairs and into the laundry room. Most of the day I helped Lucy with washing clothes. When dinner was ready I had to help clean the dishes with the cooks. It was fun talking to them, there stories and fun things they had done here. I felt more like home already than I ever had before. “Wow, you guys must have been here long if you have that many stories” I said as I scrubbed plates. “We’ve been here for 15 years” one of them said. It amazed me how long they had been here, I just barely got here and I already didn’t like Sarah Turner. She made me feel sick, her long blonde hair, made me think that she just married John just for his money not for love. Chief Rick knew exactly what I was thinking after the smile on my face faded away. “We all think that Mia, so your not alone on this” he said quietly. “Than why doesn’t anyone say something to Mr. Turner?” I asked. “Because, he loves her, not as much as he did with Lara, but he fell in love with the fake Sarah, and we could get fired if we say things like that” Rick said quickly. I assumed Lara was John’s wife that died. Something told me that I should keep all my other questions to myself and not asking them out loud.
When the Turner’s were done eating I helped clean up the dishes and wipe the table down. “Something tells me that you have a lot of questions” someone said from behind me once I was alone in the dining room. When I turned around, Jason was in the doorway with his hands in his pockets. “Now why do you keep appearing when I’m alone” I asked, I knew he thought I was cute, but I had to stay away. He was way out of my league and I knew his parents wouldn’t approve. “Well, I just have a feeling that you’re just a special girl. Now tell me what your questions are” he said sitting down on one of the fine, expensive chairs. “Uh, I don’t think I should ask” I said grabbing a pile of plates from the table. Jason reached over and grabbed them from me and set them back on the table. “Come on, I can handle it” he replied. I sat on the edge of the table, “I’m just a little confused with this whole Sarah thing” I said trying to figure it all out in my head. Jason sighed and said, “Well, it all started when Dad went back to school after Mom died. 2 weeks into the semester he met Sarah, she knew exactly how rich he was the moment she met him. All Sarah wanted was to take his money. She pretended to be someone she wasn’t. I could tell the moment he brought her home for me to meet. I had to tell my Dad, but the way he looked at her I couldn’t break his heart. Than the day came that he asked her to marry him. I finally met Cassidy, and I defiantly knew the marriage was just to get Dad’s money. Everyday Sarah and Cassidy came home with new clothes, new shoes, just new everything. I put on an act everyday so Dad doesn’t know how I really feel. He needs to find out his own way about who Sarah really is. She is trying to get me to marry in the money business just so she can take my money to and run off just like she is going to do with my Dad.”
“Wow, I’m sorry for that. My first day and I get a whole bunch of drama” I said feeling terrible for asking. He laughed and stood up, “Sorry, don’t mean to give you a hard time on your first day” he said stepping closer to me slowly and staring deeply in my eyes. “Pulling a move on the maid, very smooth” I said turning around and grabbing the plates. Jason started smiling and did a little silent laugh, “Well, your not like the other girls” he said. “No, I’m not. I’m just a poor girl that is a maid to one of the wealthiest families in this country.” I said walking back to the kitchen door. “Good night” he said still smiling. I turned around and just stared at him and went through the door. I finished cleaning up the kitchen with the others and than went to my room.
I sat in bed wondering about things. How could Jason like me, I was just a house maid. Besides shouldn’t he be going after some rich girl, who is so much better than I am. My mind wandered to many things about Jason, so I decided to as Lucy about him. She’s been here longer than anyone else and she would know everything about him. She doesn’t say much but I could tell she knows enough to write a book on this family. She will tell me what I needed to know.
Lucy woke me up around five am. I was use to getting up early but I still was very tired from staying up all night thinking about things. I changed my clothes and went downstairs to the kitchen for breakfast. No one was awake except for the workers. I sat down at the table that sat in the kitchen for the workers to eat at. Lucy was across the table from me.
Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear.
